New trainees arrive from both local court systems, as well as the Montana State Prison. Prisoners from Montana State Prison arrive in cuffs and shackles. Treasure State was established in 1993 in the Swan Valley and in 1997 moved near the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. The program began for men and women. Recently, fewer and fewer women have been admitted as the state prepares to build a women’s-only camp.
