Trainee Deerdorff’s parents, Peggy and Dennis Almendinger, wipe tears from their eyes while their son gives a graduation speech thanking his squad, platoon, drill instructors and last of all, his parents, for believing in him. Although Dan Maloughney, superintendent of the facility, says research shows that boot camps don't work, out of the 55-60 percent of trainees who have graduated in the last four years, 92 percent have stayed out of trouble.
